New Orleans Babymoon

A couple months ago, Josh and I were discussing going on one last trip as a family of two (we actually haven't been on a vacation in like 5 years haha). And were discussing where we should go.  We talked about Chicago for a football game, but the timing would have made it very cold in Chicago, Denver same thing, and I can't really do a bunch of hiking or anything right, Key West as this is where we got married (well near Key West, but we did visit it) but I felt this is usually a drinking centered location since we have seen most of what it has to offer.  So we thought maybe New Orleans? Lots to do other than drink (tons of history and ghost stuff which I am so in to) but still fun and I assumed, not quite so crazy when it's not Mardi Gras. So NOLA it was.  we decided to drive, as flights there were cheap but flights back (the Sunday of thanksgiving weekend) were insane, and car rental was also ridiculous.

It was a 10 hour drive which is not that bad, and we planned to leave at noon on Wednesday after Josh left work a bit early.  Turned out he didn't have to go in so we got a little earlier start.  We drove to Gulfport, MS, about 1 hour from New Orleans, and stayed at a little hotel along the Gulf for the night.  I of course had to get up and check the sunrise and do some shelling before we finished our trip.  There were no shells, but it was nice!

We continued on and I insisted we take the long way around and drive across the world's longest bridge, across Lake Pontchartrain.  It is 23.83 miles (38km) long.

We got to our hotel late in the morning and checked it out a bit.  The Saint Autograph Collection.  So beautiful and in such a convenient area.

After a quick stop in our room, we decided to go explore the area.  We were 2 blocks from Bourbon Street so that was out first stop.

We walked down Canal street, it was really beautiful done up for Christmas.  The hotels are gorgeous too.

We were hungry so we stopped at the Creole House just a few blocks down from our hotel.  I got a crawfish dish and gumbo and Josh got a sampler of a few traditional local dishes.  all delicious!

When looking up pictures of NOLA this one came up a few times and I am so in love with this building ad the beautiful ferns!

Jackson square, such beautiful park with vendors set up around the perimeter and the beautiful cathedral in the background.  It is also right across from the French Market and Cafe Du Monde... I couldn't wait to go.

The view of Jackson Square from the Washington Artillery Park.

The Christmas tree in Washington Artillery Park.  There was also a bagpiper set up there most of our trip.  Not offense to him but I guess I'm a bagpipe snob from growing up around them, but he was pretty terrible.

The Mississippi River at sunset.

Bourbon Street selfie. It is quite the place at night!

Our hotel lobby. The trees were so beautiful but I couldn't get decent pictures for the life of me.

Since we were in bed by about 9 pm every night, we were up early to get out exploring, we started by wandering the streets again.

After Bourbon street has been freshly hosed off and smells decent!

Our main reason for being up and out early was to get to Cafe Du Monde before there were 5 block (I'm not exaggerating) lines to get in.  We got there, waited about 10 minutes and then managed to be jerk and get a seat (my friend Sandy had let me in on a little trick to get in).  This is a NOLA  must do and a million percent worth it.  These Beignets are life changing! Especially when pregnant and craving all the sweets!

When we were done breakfast and hopped up on sugar, we got onto the Hop on Hop off bus for a tour around the city since I'm pregnant and Josh's back was bugging him. It was great and really cut our walking down.... we still got 25000 steps everyday though!

We didn't end up doing a tour of St. Louis cemetery No.1, as it had funny hours, but we did snap some pictures as we drove by.  Marie Laveau's tomb is here as well as Nicholas Cage's very crazy/cool pyramid tomb.

We drove by Harrah's, the only casino in New Orleans. Gambling is actually illegal in Louisiana, but apparently this isn't gambling, it's gaming (it is a completely normal casino with slot machines etc).

We got lunch at a little Caribbean restaurant in the Garden district.  We shared some tacos and on the way out I noticed a plaque stating that the restaurant had been "helped out" by David Adjay, a Canadian chef that I have met a few times. Pretty cool.

We went down St. Charles Street, the ritziest area of the city. Celebrities like Beyonce and Jay-Z, Ellen and Sandra Bullock have houses in this area. The mansions are huge and historic and beautiful.

The Superdome, it is so insanely huge in person.

We got back to the area of the French Market, I just love the buildings.

There were a lot of horse drawn carriages.  I wasn't a fan, the horses are obviously overworked and unhealthy.

We took a walk through the French Market. It's very huge and has some very unique items.

We got a delicious drink there as well.

Joan of Arc.

We stopped into the hotel where the carousel bar is, it is so beautiful but the bar was packed.

Dinner was at Desire Oyster Bar in the Royal Sonesta Hotel.  This is a beautiful hotel with the cutest courtyard.  We got the grilled oysters to share (unbelievably delicious) and Josh got the shrimp and grits (best shrimps and grits ever) and I had some traditional Creole Jambalaya.

This evening we did one of the things that I was most excited for on our trip.  The Haunted New Orleans Tour.  A little walking tour around the French Quarter to some of the city's most haunted places. We started at the Hotel Provincial which was a hospital for wounded soldiers during the Civil War. You can still see dismembered soldiers, operating doctors and random pools of blood.

Our next stop was one of my favorites, the LaLaurie Mansion.  Any American Horror Story fans might know the crazy history of this mansion that involves crazy human experimenting and just pure evil. There is a lot of hearsay involving this mansion but you can find out the history of it and it's insane owner Madame LaLaurie here.  The mansion is also said to be cursed, having many stories about subsequent owners having terrible luck and losing entire fortunes, including Nicholas Cage several years ago.

Next we went to Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop, a very old (the oldest bar in Louisiana and one of the oldest in the US) and dank, creepy place, especially at night as it has almost no lights inside. Jean Lafitte, the original owner was one of the most notorious pirates in US history and also helped Andrew Jackson defeat the British during the War of 1812. The bar is said to be home to Lafitte's ghost as well as as possibly a girl that killed herself there in the 1800s and another phenomenon, phantom red eyes.

Our last stop was the Andrew Jackson Hotel (one of my favorite buildings). It was originally a home for boys that lost their parents to Yellow Fever. The home burnt and building was consumed with the boys inside. The ghosts of these boys are said to be mostly mischievous, pushing people out of their beds, messing up pillows and laughing in the courtyard.

The start of our final day, in front of one of the trees in our hotel.

The restaurant in the hotel had Bloody Mary French Toast for breakfast, of course I had to try, and it was delicious!

We made our way over to Harrah's for their festival of lights.  Unfortunately it was all outside so we didn't get to enjoy the lights very well but it was still beautiful.

IN front of Archie Manning's restaurant. We found this super cute little alley way and area while wandering around.

We made our way back to the French Quarter and Canal street to check out the Bayou Classic parade, for the football game that was taking place later in the day. We got some real New Orleans and some real NOLA Mardis Gras beads.  This was a unique parade, instead of candy (there was still a little candy) the floats threw products like body wash, deodorant and toothpaste to help the kids that were there to watch the parade that are living in poverty.

We continued on to the Carousel Bar just in time for it to open.  We were stuck in a line but still got right in and got a spot.  The bar is like a carousel and very slowly rotates (very slowly). It is really cool though and has some great drinks.

We continued on our way and stopped for some souvenirs.  We found a store that had some hot sauces so hot that you had to sign a waiver.

One of our last lunches out, we went to Napoleon's for their world famous Muffaletta sandwiches.  I was advised by a friend that had been to NOLA not long before to get the sandwich here and she didn't steer us wrong.  It was AMAZING.  Even Josh, who hates olives, LOVED this sandwich.

We took a last walk down by the waterfront, and walked by the Natchez Steamboat, while the guy on top was playing some songs with the steam organ (I have no idea what that is called).

The street cars that run all over the city.

We went into the ritzy mall, mostly so I could go into Tiffany.

One of my favorite pictures from the trip, love this little side street.

Last NOLA meal! We went to Landry's Seafood House, right on the water in the Jackson Brewery Building. It as here that I got my favorite meal of the trip.

I got the Blackened Catfish Achafalaya.  One of the best things I have ever eaten. Catfish in a sauce of crawfish, capers and lemon butter. Seriously amazing. Josh got the Crab stuffed Shrimp Enbrochette, also very yummy!

We took one last walk down Bourbon Street to round off our trip.  It was still early so not too crazy this time and I actually got some good pictures.

We were back in the hotel and in bed by 8pm so that we could be up and on the road by about 6am.  While Josh was getting the truck from the parking garage in the morning, I took a couple more pictures of the hotel. Little did I know that all the sirens I had woken up to in the night was a mass shooting at the hotel next door.  10 people were shot in total and as we walked out we saw the crazy scene, a couple hours after it had unfolded.  A terrible tragedy, and make me happy we had been back in the hotel and in bed so early.

On the way back  I snapped a couple pics.  Sweet Home Alabama and Chattahoochee, because way down yonder on the".

We were home by about 6pm that night and considering it was one of the worst driving days of the year, it really wasn't that bad.

Here are some of my souvenirs from the trip.

We had a great little getaway, it had been years since we really did anything like this, so it was nice to  get out and have some adventure!  We really enjoyed the city and definitely want to go back some day as there were still things that we never got a chance to do .

Fab Friday Faves 12.13.19

Happy Friday y'all! And a happy Friday the 13th at that.  Just a quick update from the last few weeks. We had a great trip to New Orleans, I'm working on a blog about the weekend but honestly I have been so busy! At my appt 9 days ago, baby was doing great and weighed 2lbs10oz. I feel like he's gained about a whole lb since then.  Everything is getting harder and harder to do, just rolling over in bed is starting to be a chore.  I'm 29 weeks tomorrow. Josh and I had a lovely 7th anniversary yesterday... how has it been 7 years?
We are having Chad and Chrissy over for the weekend, and then a little Christmas party with a few friends on Sunday.
Alright, heres a quick Five (maybe more) from the last few weeks.

Our 7th anniversary.   How is this even possible?  We went to Giovanni's just a few minutes from our house and had a delicious meal.  Josh also surprised me with a massage and Starbucks gift card earlier in the day.

A teaser of our NOLA trip.  Stay tuned next week for the whole blog!

The weekend before New Orleans, we went to Christmastown at Busch Gardens with Chad and Chrissy and the boys.  We had a great evening and it is so beautiful at Christmas there,

My Christmas nails that I got done a couple days ago.  SO cute!

This is my Thanksgiving adopted turkey, Elsa.  I adopt a turkey from Farm Sanctuary every year.  It is a great cause!

Fab Friday Faves 11.22.19

Hi everyone! Happy Friday!  Last week I just didn't have enough to warrant doing a whole blog, but I've managed to scrape together a few things for this week.  This week has been long.  Smudge has been sick since last Friday, and has had several vet visits and medications.  This morning, she got a sedative and went to stay at the vet for a few hours.  They think they have figured out the problem and she is on an antibiotic and some other medications.  I also have not been feeling the greatest, I developed at UTI on Saturday morning and ended up having to go to Urgent Care for some antibiotics.  I still don't feel amazing but I am sure the stress from worrying about Smudge hasn't helped. Hopefully we are both on the mend, as Josh and I leave on Wednesday for New Orleans and I don't want to have to worry! I also had my Glucose Screening this morning while Smudge was at the vet.  It wasn't bad at all and I just read a book for the whole hour.  Fingers crossed I don't have to go in for the 3 hour test next week!
Chad and Chrissy are coming over to meet us at at Busch Gardens tomorrow which should be great.  Christmas town is up and running there and it is supposed to be beautiful.
Everyone enjoy your weekend and a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Two weekends ago, Josh was invited to a Luxury box to watch the Buccaneers play the Cardinals.  We met up with his co-worker and wife for some pre game tailgating and then we got to watch the game in the air conditioning with tons of food and drink.  No better way to do it!

I got my hair done this week, it made me feel a bit better and I really wanted to have it done for our trip next week.  As usual Serena at Sola did a great job.

I got my nails done this week too, it was a cute idea that my friend Jodie sent me, great for fall!
I haven't been out shelling too much lately but I try to get out once a week.  This is my haul from last week at low tide.  It has been so nice to get out and not be sweating by 6am. Also, you can't beat the sunrise!

Cheerios came out with a toasted Coconut flavor, I'm not sure when, but if you know me I am a sucker for anything coconut.  These are delicious!

I've gotten a couple pregnancy boxes in the last couple weeks.  The first one was a free one I got from  babylist.com for adding a certain amount to my registry.  I was actually shocked at how awesome it was, some really great things in it.  If you are interested, you can find our registry HERE.
The second box, I paid for, from bumpboxes.com I got some great stuff for me and for baby.  The box is $40 a month and I really love it.  If you are interested, you can use this link to purchase http:/bumpbox.co/Dmqht

Mason Jar Lid Pumpkins

So I have been looking for some new crafts to do, and since I love Fall and Fall decorations, I have been on the look out for a few easy and cute ideas.  When I was in Saskatchewan, I saw these adorable little pumpkins at the Fall into Christmas Tradeshow and knew I had to try them out when I got home.  The concept is really easy, just Mason jar lids (about $5 for 12 at Walmart) tied together and then you can then add any embellishments that you want. The biggest trick to these was that I chose to make the lids rustic looking, and had to figure out how to rust the lids.  Not necessary, but I really liked the vintage farm look.  I have seen some that had the lids not rusted and fully painted orange, which were also cute.  I made one, (see third photo) that I just used some orange spray paint on the top of the pumpkin, over top of the rust.  Below I have the instructions for these cute little guys, even though they are pretty easy and open to interpretation. I also have the instructions for rusting the lids, this can be used on most metal items that you may want to rust as well.  You may also be wondering what you do with the left over sealers for the lids.  Stay tuned for a cute christmas craft using these!

How to rust the Lids

Materials and tools
  • Sandpaper- 100 grit or higher.
  • plastic bin
  • gloves
  • safety goggles
  • plastic spray bottle
  • white vinegar
  • hydrogen peroxide
  • table salt
  • acrylic spray sealer (optional)

Step one:

Prepare the work area:
If you can do this outside, it will turn out better.  Direct sunlight will speed up the oxidation process (this is very true, I did one set outside on a hot day, and one set in the dark garage and the ones I did outside changed quicker and looked better). Also, if you do it outside, you won't have to worry about the fumes. Regardless, work in a well ventilated area.

Step two:

Sand the Metal with the fine grit sandpaper:
Lightly sand the entire surface of the lids to take of the protect coating. It doesn't take much, I spent probably 30 seconds on each one.  Place the lids in the plastic bin.

Step three:

Spray vinegar on the metal and wait:
Put on your gloves and safety goggles and then pour about 1 cup of vinegar in to the spray bottle (how much you need will depend on how many lids you are rusting) and generously spray the lids. Let them air dry, preferably in the sun for about 10 minutes. If you have no sun, maybe leave them longer, like 20 minutes. You should see some rust start to form.

Step four:

Apply the Peroxide, Vinegar, Salt solution:
Pour 2 cups of Peroxide, four tablespoons of vinegar and 2 tablespoons of salt into the spray bottle and shake it until the salt is dissolved. Spray the lids all over the lids (the outsides are most important for this craft. The peroxide should begin to bubble and rust should start tot form immediately. Let them air dry in the sun again for a few minutes, if they need a second of third treatment, go ahead and do that.  Once they are to your liking, rinse them off, just to get the smell and dried salt off.

Step five (optional)
Spray with a sealer:
If desired, spray the lids with a sealer.  The only real reason to do this is so that he rust doesn't rub off on anything it might come in contact with.

Now for actually making the pumpkins.

I just took the lids and stacked them together in my hand, they naturally start to form a circle.  I then take some twine and tie it around the middle and then fan the lids out to complete the circle.

I really love the idea of using a cinnamon stick or two (depending on the size) but you can use anything that works.

Again, these are so open to interpretation and creativity. But I really like some Raffia and burlap ribbon tied around and then a brighter festive ribbon to complete the look.

Again, this is the one I did with the paint on the top.  It is still sort of subtle, but really makes you realize what it is if you didn't already know.

Again, the completed product, so festive and fun!

*Recipe* No Bake Lemon Cheesecake Pie

My dear friend Jodie loves to send me cards and sometimes she will throw in a recipe card for me with a favorite recipe on it.  A few months ago, she sent me this recipe, and I have been waiting and excited to make it!  I finally had a reason on Saturday, for a get together with some friends.  I knew it would be delicious, and that was definitely the consensus amongst the group! It isn't really a Fall recipe but isn't anything lemon delicious anytime?

Ingredients

Crust
  • about 30-35 (1 pkg) Lemon Oreos
  • 6 Tbsp butter

Filling
  • 3 fresh lemons
  • 2-8oz pkg cream cheese (room temp)
  • 3/4 of a 14oz can Sweetened Condensed Milk
Directions

Crust
  • Crush entire package of Oreos in a blender and put into a large Ziplock bag.
  • Melt butter and add to the Oreos.
  • Mix well in bag (squish it around for a while).
  • Dump into a deep pie dish and press evenly onto bottom and sides.

Filling
  • In a large bowl, mix cream cheese until all clumps are gone with a mixer.
  • Add condensed milk, juice from the 3 lemons plus a bit of zest.  I actually also used about 3 drops of Food Grade lemon essential oil to make it extra lemony.
  • Slowly mix for about 5 minutes.
  • Pour into prepared pie plate.
  • Add some zest on top and refrigerate two hours.
  • Enjoy!

Fab Friday Faves 11.8.19

Hi Everyone, happy Friday! It's been quite a busy but non exciting week, the only thing really was an ultrasound on Monday.  Everything is still great and looking good enough that I don't have another appointment for a month! That will be the longest by far that I've gone without a doctor visit for my whole pregnancy. Hoping for smooth sailing.  I'm 24 weeks tomorrow so the 3rd trimester is closing in.  Josh and I are planning a Babymoon to New Orleans for Thanksgiving weekend which should be fun.  I'm really excited for some cool history, ghosts and amazing food.  We are going to a cookout with some friends tomorrow afternoon and on Sunday we are going to the Buccaneers vs. Cardinals game in the Luxury box which is always a good time.

Everyone have a great weekend!

I started getting the house ready for Fall this week.  Honestly, Fall is my favorite time to decorate for, I may just start keeping pumpkins all around year round. This is just the fireplace but it's pretty much everywhere is decorate.

We went kayaking on Sunday on one of our first nice, cool mornings.  It was beautiful and relaxing.  I'm hoping I can make it out for a few more paddles before this bump gets too big!

On Friday, we went to First Friday in Tarpon Springs (which by the way, if you haven't been, it is really amazing!).  I got this amazing chocolate covered cherry pie cup from Glorious Pies... ummm hello... this thing was to die for and they have a ton of different flavors.

I started going to a new yoga studio, in Tarpon Springs, GypSea Air.  It is super cute and they have a few great gentle/prenatal classes that I really enjoy.  I highly recommend yoga during pregnancy, its so centering and really helps with breathing and relaxation.

A few months ago I got a Soda Stream 50% off at Target.  I told Josh is could be a Christmas present but since I have been drinking an obscene amount of water lately, I thought instead of buying tons of  La Croix etc I may as well fire this bad boy up.  I love it (I don't drink pop so I haven't tried it for that) and the sparkling water is great.  I even found some mocktail Pina Colada drops for it so thats been making things a little more exciting.

Fab Friday Faves 11.1.19

Happy Friday everyone! It's my first Friday blog for a month and I have so much to share but I'll keep it at things that area actually from this week.  If you missed my blog about my trip back to Saskatchewan, just look at the last post to check it out. I had such a great time but it is nice to be back and start focussing on baby.  I had another anatomy scan and fetal echocardiogram on Thursday and everything is perfect with our little man.  He is 1lb2oz and growing right on schedule.  He is also wild, it took over an hour again for the ultrasound because he keeps flailing around, which is no secret to me, he kicks and moves most of the day, thankfully not much at night yet though.  Lets hope he keeps sleeping at night for the next several years. I am feeling good besides the severe carpal tunnel and Bernhardt-Roth syndrome (when the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve in the outer thigh becomes compressed) that are both fairly common and not dangerous in pregnancy but really annoying as I can't sleep or stand or walk comfortably for more than a few minutes. I also still really have no use for food, I just eat because I know I need to.  On the positive side, I'm not back up to my pre-pregnancy weight yet, which is good since my doctor gave e a hard time for gaining 2 whole pounds when I was in Saskatchewan.

Alright, everyone have a great weekend and see you next week!

While I was in Saskatchewan, my door project got completed.  Thanks to Josh and Toby for the hard work.  It really updated the look of the house and I LOVE the color.

After

 Before

Here he is! Our little man, from the ultrasound on Thursday.  The managed (after a few tries) to get a great shot of his face).  He's got daddy's lips for sure and is so darn cute already.

Smudge and I in our costumes yesterday for Halloween.  We had 49 trick or treaters and enjoyed a very hot evening out in the driveway handing out candy.

Since I only got back to Florida a few days before Halloween I didn't do an indoor/outdoor decorating frenzy but I did put a few up outside.  I also didn't carve a pumpkin but I did make a flaming-o-lantern. Everything is down already this morning and the house is ready for my extensive Thanksgiving decorating.

On Saturday, we went to Keel and Curley Farm for their Farmfest.  Chad and Chrissy and the boys joined us and we had a lovely afternoon, minus the on and off rain.  Also, that donut I have in the bottom picture is a meyer lemon and coconut donut and is AMAZING.

My sort of Halloween nails.  They actually look better in real life than in this picture.

I have been making some little Mason Jar lid pumpkins and they are so cute.  I'm experimenting with some different styles.  If anyone wants one let me know! Stay tuned for a DIY blog soon.
