Mason Jar Lid Pumpkins

So I have been looking for some new crafts to do, and since I love Fall and Fall decorations, I have been on the look out for a few easy and cute ideas.  When I was in Saskatchewan, I saw these adorable little pumpkins at the Fall into Christmas Tradeshow and knew I had to try them out when I got home.  The concept is really easy, just Mason jar lids (about $5 for 12 at Walmart) tied together and then you can then add any embellishments that you want. The biggest trick to these was that I chose to make the lids rustic looking, and had to figure out how to rust the lids.  Not necessary, but I really liked the vintage farm look.  I have seen some that had the lids not rusted and fully painted orange, which were also cute.  I made one, (see third photo) that I just used some orange spray paint on the top of the pumpkin, over top of the rust.  Below I have the instructions for these cute little guys, even though they are pretty easy and open to interpretation. I also have the instructions for rusting the lids, this can be used on most metal items that you may want to rust as well.  You may also be wondering what you do with the left over sealers for the lids.  Stay tuned for a cute christmas craft using these!

How to rust the Lids

Materials and tools
  • Sandpaper- 100 grit or higher.
  • plastic bin
  • gloves
  • safety goggles
  • plastic spray bottle
  • white vinegar
  • hydrogen peroxide
  • table salt
  • acrylic spray sealer (optional)

Step one:

Prepare the work area:
If you can do this outside, it will turn out better.  Direct sunlight will speed up the oxidation process (this is very true, I did one set outside on a hot day, and one set in the dark garage and the ones I did outside changed quicker and looked better). Also, if you do it outside, you won't have to worry about the fumes. Regardless, work in a well ventilated area.

Step two:

Sand the Metal with the fine grit sandpaper:
Lightly sand the entire surface of the lids to take of the protect coating. It doesn't take much, I spent probably 30 seconds on each one.  Place the lids in the plastic bin.

Step three:

Spray vinegar on the metal and wait:
Put on your gloves and safety goggles and then pour about 1 cup of vinegar in to the spray bottle (how much you need will depend on how many lids you are rusting) and generously spray the lids. Let them air dry, preferably in the sun for about 10 minutes. If you have no sun, maybe leave them longer, like 20 minutes. You should see some rust start to form.

Step four:

Apply the Peroxide, Vinegar, Salt solution:
Pour 2 cups of Peroxide, four tablespoons of vinegar and 2 tablespoons of salt into the spray bottle and shake it until the salt is dissolved. Spray the lids all over the lids (the outsides are most important for this craft. The peroxide should begin to bubble and rust should start tot form immediately. Let them air dry in the sun again for a few minutes, if they need a second of third treatment, go ahead and do that.  Once they are to your liking, rinse them off, just to get the smell and dried salt off.

Step five (optional)
Spray with a sealer:
If desired, spray the lids with a sealer.  The only real reason to do this is so that he rust doesn't rub off on anything it might come in contact with.

Now for actually making the pumpkins.

I just took the lids and stacked them together in my hand, they naturally start to form a circle.  I then take some twine and tie it around the middle and then fan the lids out to complete the circle.

I really love the idea of using a cinnamon stick or two (depending on the size) but you can use anything that works.

Again, these are so open to interpretation and creativity. But I really like some Raffia and burlap ribbon tied around and then a brighter festive ribbon to complete the look.

Again, this is the one I did with the paint on the top.  It is still sort of subtle, but really makes you realize what it is if you didn't already know.

Again, the completed product, so festive and fun!

My Spring Decorating Tips

Happy Easter everyone! After my post about my Christmas decorations, I had some inquiries about where I get all of my decorations.  I've actually been collecting my decorations that are here for about 6 years, since I moved to the US.  This is probably why we always had soooo much stuff to move when we were on the road.  I always had a pretty good collection wherever we were traveling as well as here when we got the house.  This doesn't include probably 10 years of stuff that is in Saskatchewan, waiting to come down here and get thrown into the mix.
I guess my main "secret" for buying decorations is Shop after the holidays! People get excited about going to Walmart and getting a 75% off bag of candy after halloween, but I am scouring the stores for  deals on decorations and home decor.  You bet that tomorrow I will be out first thing in the morning looking to get the best Easter decorations for less than half the price of what they were on Friday. Some of my favorite "post Holiday sale" stores are:
Kohls
Michaels
Target
Walmart (but in recent years they have less and less for a shorter time)
Pier One
CVS
Walgreens
JC Penney
Hallmark
Zulily
here in Florida we also have Steinmart.

Another trick is don't be a snob about where you buy stuff.  While I am a bit picky about brands when it comes to food, I don't discriminate when it comes to off brand or store brand when it comes to much else.  Check out all the Dollar Stores in your area.  Here we have about four different ones and you can find some great, high quality looking items at all the stores.

Another item, a favorite in all my seasonal decorating are florals and stems.  "Fake" flowers and plants are so beautiful now and places like Hobby Lobby, Michael's and Joanne's have aisles and aisles of more colors and types than you could ever imagine.  A lot of them will also be seasonal items and will be cheaper after the holidays, but, year round, if you watch for sales and coupons, you can usually get 50% off most every couple months.  You can also repurpose some of the florals for different occasions.  The red from your Christmas florals work great at Valentines day, and white is universal for Christmas, spring/Easter and even 4th of July/ Canada Day.

I also watch clearance sections (especially at places like Michaels) for items that have been damaged a bit in shipping or just from normal wear and tear in the store.  The "Welcome Bunny" on the wreath on my door had a bit of a broken arm but was easily glued and the girl bunny on my blanket ladder has a bum foot and she doesn't stand right.I stuck a coaster under her foot for now, but she can be easily fixed as well. I paid less than half price for both of these items.

Those are some of my favorite tips.  If you have anymore good ones for me, or if you have any more stores that you frequent for "day after" sales, please let me know below!

Cutest teapot ever.  I got this one from Steinmart with my 20% off birthday coupon.

Sasafras mats are fantastic too, I have one for every season and occasion and usually pay about $8 for each insert.

The table runner is from Kohls, post Easter a few years ago.

I got these beautiful bunny platter and bowl and Marshalls after Easter last year.

This cloche is from Target clearance (for $5) and can be used for every single occasion.

I got this crate at a garage sale, and the flowers and bunny were all 50% off at Michaels.

The HELLO pillow is from Target Dollar Spot.

You can also use your pets to decorate haha.

This adorable tray is from Steinmart.  I plan on going back to get more of the set this week.

A Shower For Baby Boy!

A couple weeks ago, I had the honor of hosting a baby shower for my best friend, Nicole and her, yet to be born baby boy, Jackson.  I had never thrown a baby shower before, and actually have only been to a very small handful of them, so I was going into it a little bit blind.  Thank goodness for Pinterest!   Well, sort of... I feel like Pinterest can also make one feel very inadequate.  I had to realize that I didn't have a group of 10 people helping me and an unlimited budget.  I actually had a really good time planning and shopping, I forgot how much I love throwing parties!  Except of course for the fact that it seems no one can RSVP anymore.  Really people, it isn't hard, and it makes everyone's lives easier.  Anyway, Jackson has since arrived in the world, and I hope the shower was a chance for mama to enjoy some time with her friends and get some awesome gifts and food.

The invites, from Vistaprint.com

We did a Baby's Birth Day Pool and the Clothespin game.  Grandma Wendy won the Birth Day Pool!

For the main "game" I channeled one of Nicole's favorite shows, Gilmore Girls.  I have never watched the show, but thankfully our mutual friend Lindsey does and told me about it.  It was a Onesie decorating contest.  I also included bibs in the game and ordered some cute woodland creature iron-ons from Etsy, got some fabric paint, fabric markers, and blank iron-on paper from Michaels.

We had a lot of fun decorating these, and Megan and myself ended up winning!

I dug up some baby pictures of Jason and Nicole to decorate with, since almost nobody at the shower would have ver seen these before.

I had a hard time with the decorations.  Early on, I was informed that I had to have a theme, so I went with the Woodland Creature theme, but the decorations for the most part were just blue streamers, fans, balls, table coverings, ribbon, balloons,  etc.  It all actually came together quite nicely.

The food was the fun part.  I wanted a few things that I knew Nicole was really loving while she was pregnant, and also some that everyone would like.  I made Easter Crack, changed to Baby Boy Crack (terrible name I know), blue chocolate covered pretzels, chips and homemade dill pickle dip, strawberries and pineapple and blue Rice Krispie squares.  I had Nicole's mom bring two of our favorite Canadian treats, Ketchup chips and Butter Tarts. Thanks to Imelda who brought some cheese and cracker trays.  I also ordered some cute woodland creature cupcakes from a local girl with a home based business here in Waldorf called Fancy Hat Cupcakes.  They were delicious and adorable, not to mention very reasonably priced.  I also made some Baby Boy Punch, made with a Bottle of blue Hawaiian Punch, A bottle of 7UP and a big can of Pineapple juice.  Vodka was of course optional.  Thanks to Blanca for bringing the fix in's for Mimosas.

Nicole had lots of gifts to open, so as she was doing that, I snapped some pictures.

After a few hours of visiting, opening gifts, eating and decorating onesies and bibs, everyone started to trickle out.  And of course they couldn't forget their party favors!

Thanks to everyone for coming, I hope everyone had a good time, especially Nicole! And a big thanks to Pinterest and the internet for all the help!
